72 nd St / 61 st St Median
On February 28th, a vehicle traveling North to South on 72nd E Ave crossed 61 st St. at a high rate of speed. As the vehicle crossed 61 st St., it hit another vehicle traveling East on 61 st St. and spun the speeding vehicle 180 degrees. It then proceeded to slam into the Shadow Mountain signpost, wiped out the electrical panel, and the irrigation controls. When the offending vehicle hit the sign-post, it blew brick and cement debris on a third vehicle that was waiting at the stop sign on 72 nd E Ave to turn East on 61 st St. Miraculously, no one was severely injured. It has taken an extremely long time for the insurance company, representing the offending vehicle, to process our property damage claim. The good news is that we should have our compensation check in the next two weeks. We are now working with PSO to restore power to the median. (Please see additional comments under 61 st St. Entry Wall for the continuation of this event.)
61 st Entry Wall
On March 25th, the driver of a vehicle traveling South on 72 nd E Ave attempted to turn East on 61 st St, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into our neighborhood entry wall on the Southside of 61 st St. The driver of this vehicle was uninsured. The entry wall has now been repaired. In the aftermath of two such crazy events, the SMHA Board of Directors made the decision to wait until the insurance check associated with signpost & median damage before making any final decisions on the next steps.
Dumpsters – City of Tulsa Program
SMHA was notified by the City of Tulsa Neighborhood Dumpster Program Administrator, that the program was stopped until further notice halted due to COVID 19. The Dumpster Program
was resumed. Dumpsters will be places sometime in the day of August 7th and picked up the morning of August 11th.
SMHA Membership
HOA dues are still only $75 per calendar year. It is never too late to become a bonified member of the HOA.
Landscaping
Bob Rice, who has served on the Board of Directors for several years, oversees the common area landscape maintenance contract. Once PSO repairs the electrical connection in the median
at 61 st & 72nd, all the damaged plants, and shrubs replaced. Restoration work will be completed in Spring 2021.
SMHA Insurance Plan
SMHA is required by its Bylaws to maintain General Liability insurance as well as Directors and Officers coverage. SMHA has never carried property insurance coverage in the past but recent
property damage claims have forced the Board of Directors to add property damage coverage.
New Directory
The creation of a new SMHA Neighborhood Directory is in process. Release pending confirmation of all current email addresses and cross-referencing of names and streets.
New Board Members
Oceanna Finley and Eddie Heck have been added to the SMHA Board of Directors. Oceanna will be helping maintain our website and Eddies has agreed to serve as the Treasurer.
Public Safety
The “New Quiktrip”, has greatly increased the amount and type of traffic speeding up and down 61 st St. The volume of “cut-through traffic in Shadow Mountain has also increased exponentially
in recent years. Many of you may John & Bonita Watts who were both killed in 2018 by a driver going 85 mph while turning from 72 nd E Ave onto 61 st Street. The driver was charged with
negligent homicide. The intersection of 72 nd and 61 st St. is a problem that will only get worse over time unless we are willing to do something about it. If you have any interest in becoming part of the solution, please contact one of the Shadow Mountain Board members. A complete list of the Board Members can be found on the shadowmountaintulsa.com website.
Street Repairs
The recent “micro-surfacing” project by the City of Tulsa, Street Maintenance Department, came as a complete surprise to SMHA. While we welcome any street improvements to our
neighborhood, it would have been nice to have had some advanced notice of the project. This, Unfortunately, E. 64th Street was determined to be beyond repair and therefore was not a
candidate for micro-surfacing. The City has not been able to provide SMHA with a timeline for “replacement”.
SMHA Website Redesign
We have recently updated our website. Online payment for HOA dues is now “Live”. You can also check us out on Facebook.
